Hereceived his preliminary education in the public schools ofAddison, N. Y., from 1873 to 1877. He began his railway career as a section laborer for the Atchison, Topeka& Santa Fe road in 1881, and later was station laborer and clerk for thesame road at Deming, N. M. He began his climb of the steps to a railroadpresidency when he was promoted to station agent at Lordsburg, N. M.,and the years up to 1897 were spent as station agent at that place, atBenson, Ariz., and at Reno, Nev. From 1897 to 1
